Performance Conversations
 is
a two part / two day program that focuses on Effective Performance Feedback, Defensiveness and Abrasive Behaviour.

Part One: Effective Performance Feedback

For many, delivering effective feedback is the most challenging aspect of managing people. These discussions can potentially impact on your relationship with the employee, the person’s performance and the team dynamic / output.

Managers, leaders and supervisors often struggle with employees who have attendance issues, behaviours that negatively impact the team, or have not met expectations.

This practical, highly interactive course explores ways to provide feedback that supports a positive, performance driven environment where these conversations are expected and received well.

At the end of Part One, participants will be able to:

- Initiate 4 feedback conversations that result in behavior change and maintain the employee relationship;

- Understand and empathize with struggling employees and still hold them to workplace expectations;

- Utilize a toolkit of options for difficult conversations and be prepared to respond to a variety of reactions;

- Know how to adjust conversations when speaking to the direct, blunt employee as well as the indirect sensitive employee (adding art to the science).

Part Two: Defensiveness and Abrasive Behaviour

Leaders, managers and supervisors are expected to lead, coach, mentor and give employees feedback. These are situations where defensiveness often emerges.

Defensiveness prevents people from learning and blocks the potential for new possibilities. Part Two will look at the internal / external causes of defensiveness, as well as ways we can intentionally work to reduce defensiveness.

There is also small group of employees that have abrasive behaviours. Managing the behaviour of these employees is no easy task, and doing it poorly, or failing to do it can have disastrous consequences. Often our regular feedback methods do not work and we struggle to know what to do.

At Part Two of this workshop, participants will:

- Explore internal and external causes of defensiveness;

- Identify concrete strategies to respond to a person who is being defensive;

- Look at our own defensive responses and its antidote;

- Learn how to intervene in a calm and confident manner with an abrasive employee; and

- Learn to deal with resistance from an abrasive employee.
